Strength

50 mg/mL (volume: 2 mL)

100 mg/mL (volume: 1 mL)

IV administration

Give undiluted or dilute to 50 mg/mL or weaker and give over 30 minutes, preferably via a large peripheral vein.

Other routes of administration

IM: Thiamine Hydrochloride (Biological Therapies) only: Suitable. Give undiluted.

SC: Not recommended.

Compatible IV fluids

Vitamin B1 50 mg/mL or weaker:

Sodium chloride 0.9% is the preferred diluent.

Glucose 5%

Additional information

Extravasation risk.

Observe closely for anaphylactic reactions.

Use only when facilities for cardiac monitoring and cardio-respiratory resuscitation exist.

An intradermal diluted test dose may be required prior to administration in patients who have suspected sensitivity or a history of allergy. Refer to local guidelines for information.

Protect from light during storage.

Thiamine Hydrochloride (Biological Therapies)Caution in neonates; contains benzyl alcohol which has been linked with ‘gasping syndrome’.

Discard any unused vial contents. 

Thiamine Sterop: Solution should be clear, colourless to slightly yellow.
