Important notes
Maximum concentrations of glucose: Glucose 12.5% or weaker can be administered via a peripheral line and glucose 30% or weaker can be administered via a central line.
Flushing lines: Flush between compatible drugs with an appropriate volume of compatible fluid for the patient. For incompatible drugs, the flush volume is dependent on the drug regimen and the line set-up. The flush should be given at the same rate that the drug is given. Never use a potassium containing fluid to flush. Keep flush volumes to a minimum but consider that there may be significant drug remaining in the line. Beware of the potential for fluid overload in patients receiving multiple drugs.
Sodium content: Some medications contain large quantities of sodium ions and this should be considered in the management of the patient. Refer to local medicines information resources.
Potassium content: Some medications contain potassium ions and this should be considered in the management of the patient. Refer to local medicines information resources.
