Presentation and preparation

50 mg/mL (volume: 10 mL)

IV administration

Dilute to 2 to 4 mg/mL and give over 8 to 12 hours or give as a continuous infusion. 

If patient has cerebral oedema and lead encephalopathy, IM is the preferred route; should the IV route still be necessary, rapid administration should be avoided. Rapid infusion may cause a fatal increase in intracranial pressure. Seek specialist advice.

Other routes of administration

IM: Not recommended.

SC: Not recommended.

Compatible IV fluids

Glucose 5%

Sodium chloride 0.9%

Additional information

Extravasation risk.

Ensure adequate hydration prior to and during administration.
