Presentation and preparation
200 mg/mL (volume: 10 mL)
IV administration
RCH only: Refer to Medication Guideline – Sodium Benzoate.
Dilute to 50 mg/mL or weaker and infuse over 1.5 to 2 hours, or by continuous infusion.
Administer preferably via a central line, or via a large peripheral vein.
If a loading dose is required, give over 1.5 to 2 hours.
Other routes of administration
IM: Not recommended.
SC: Not recommended.
Compatible IV fluids
Glucose 10% is the preferred diluent.

Sodium Chloride 0.9%
Additional information
Use cautiously in neonates due to an increased risk of kernicterus and metabolic acidosis.
Has been co-infused via a Y-site with sodium phenylbutyrate, arginine and carnitine.
Extravasation risk.
Loading dose may be required; refer to relevant local guideline.
Premedication with ondansetron or similar anti-emetic prior to administration is recommended and may reduce the incidence and intensity of side effects during the infusion. Refer to relevant local guideline.
Therapeutic drug monitoring may be required; refer to local guidelines.
