Methylene Blue

Strength

5 mg/mL (volume: 10 mL)

10 mg/mL (volume: 5 mL)

IV administration

Give undiluted slowly over at least 5 minutes, preferably via a central line, or dilute in 50 mL and give over 5 to 30 minutes. Use immediately following dilution.

Dilution may reduce pain during administration.

Other routes of administration

IM: Contraindicated.

SC: Contraindicated.

Compatible IV fluids

Glucose 5%

Additional information

Extravasation risk.

Observe closely for anaphylactic reactions.

Potentially hazardous medication: may require special handling precautions, refer to RCH Safe Handling of Hazardous Medications Procedure or relevant local guideline.

Cardiac monitoring recommended during and after treatment. 

Solution should be clear and blue.

Discard any unused vial contents.

Protect from light during storage.
