IV administration
Concentrations and rates refer to the magnesium component.
IV administration is the preferred route of administration.
Dilute to 0.8 mmol/mL or weaker for administration.
Doses up to 8 mmol: infuse over at least 2 hours.
Doses over 8 mmol: infuse over 4 hours.
Maximum rate: 0.5 mmol/kg/hour.
In emergencies:
Doses may be given over shorter durations depending on indication. See local guidelines.
Other routes of administration
IM: Suitable. Dilute to 0.8 mmol/mL or weaker.
SC: Not recommended.

Additional information
Monitor respiratory rate and blood pressure.
Monitor urine output.
Rapid IV infusion may cause hypotension, nausea, respiratory depression, and cardiac arrhythmias.
Discard any unused vial or ampoule contents.
