Presentation and preparation
25 mg/mL (volume: 10 mL)
IV administration
Complex administration; refer to local protocols.
Flush line with sodium chloride 0.9% before and after administration (see below for more detailed information). Dilute dose in 100 mL of sodium chloride 0.9% to give a maximum concentration of 2.5 mg/mL.
Immediately administer over 30 minutes to 1 hour via a central line only, using an infusion set with a filter (e.g. a blood transfusion set) or an amber inline 15-micron filter.
After the infusion, flush the line with 100 mL sodium chloride 0.9% as follows: Give 3 to 4 bolus injections of 10 mL sodium chloride 0.9%, then give the rest by infusion over 10 to 15 minutes.
Glass containers or non-PVC bags and giving sets should be used.

Extravasation risk.
Observe closely for anaphylactic reactions.
Haem arginate is only stable for 1 hour once prepared, ensure central line access is in place prior to preparing the infusion.
Use diluted solution within 1 hour of preparation (including infusion time).
Each 10 mL ampoule of haem arginate contains 1 g of ethanol (96%).
Document brand name and batch number for each dose administered according to local guidelines.
Refrigerate, do not freeze.
Solution is a dark red-brown colour.
Discard any unused vial contents.
Protect from light during storage and administration.
