CLONazepam

Strength

1 mg/mL (volume: 1 mL)

1 mL ampoule of water for injections for dilution supplied per vial of clonazepam.

IV administration

Administration via a large vein is recommended. 

Dilute to 500 microgram/mL with water for injections provided and give over at least 2 minutes.

May be further diluted to 12 microgram/mL or weaker with a compatible fluid to be given as an infusion.

Maximum rate: 500 microgram/minute. 

Non-PVC bags and giving sets should be used. Infusion solutions prepared in PVC bags are only stable for 4 hours. Prepare immediately before use.

Other routes of administration

IM: Not recommended due to limited efficacy dataIf necessary, dilute to 500 microgram/mL with water for injections provided and give by IM Injection.

SC: Suitable. May be given as an intermittent or continuous SC infusion in palliative care settings.

Additional information

Extravasation risk.

Potentially hazardous medication: may require special handling precautions; refer to RCH Safe Handling of Hazardous Medicines Procedure or relevant local guideline.

Use with caution in neonates; contains benzyl alcohol which has been linked with ‘gasping syndrome’.

Monitor respiratory rate and blood pressure during administration.

Concomitant use of CNS depressants (e.g. opioids, IM olanzapine) increases the risk of respiratory depression, sedation, coma and death.

Do not give clonazepam within 1 hour of IM olanzapine.

Solution should be clear and colourless or slightly green-yellow.

Protect from light during storage.
