Presentation and preparation

For IV administration:

Reconstitute to 100 mg/mL for IV administration.

For IM administration:

Reconstitute to 230 mg/mL for IM administration.

IV administration

Dilute reconstituted solution to 40 mg/mL or weaker and infuse over 30 minutes.

In severe or life-threatening infections, may be used undiluted (100 mg/mL). Give by slow IV injection over at least 3 minutes.

Other routes of administration

IV is the preferred route.

IM: Suitable. Give reconstituted solution by deep IM injection into a large muscle mass.

SC: Not recommended.

Glucose 5%

Sodium chloride 0.9%

Cefepime 40 mg/mL or weaker

Glucose 5% and sodium chloride 0.9%

Glucose 10%

Hartmann's

Y-site only and cefepime 20 mg/mL or weaker:

Potassium chloride 20 mmol/L

Additional information

IV aminoglycoside antibiotics are inactivated by IV cephalosporins, penicillins and teicoplanin; refer to Glossary and Notes

Reconstituted solution should be clear and colourless or slightly yellow to amber. Reconstituted solution may darken on storage without affecting potency.

Protect from light during storage.
