IV administration
Administer a test dose at least 10 minutes prior to the loading dose infusion to assess for anaphylaxis.
Administer via a central line only.
Give undiluted.
Loading dose: Give by slow injection at a maximum rate of 5 to 10 mL/minute or infuse over at least 20 to 30 minutes.
Maintenance dose: Infuse continuously.
Other routes of administration
IM: Not recommended.
SC: Not recommended.
Additional information
Observe closely for anaphylactic reactions, including patients who tolerated the test dose.
Risk of anaphylaxis increases with repeated use. Premedication with an antihistamine 15 minutes prior to test dose may be considered when clinically appropriate.
Patient should be in the supine position and intubated during administration (including test dose).
Rapid administration may cause transient hypotension.
Monitor blood pressure closely: hypotension may be a sign of anaphylaxis.
Use only when facilities for cardiac monitoring and cardio-respiratory resuscitation exist.
Discard any unused vial contents.
Protect from light during storage.
